Exoskeleton for Muscular Dystrophy
This project describes the co-creation between Yumen Bionics, designer Anneke van Abbema and Bolster Softgoods in developing and producing an exoskeleton specifically tailored for users with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This kind of innovation has the potential to significantly improve the quality of life for individuals with this condition by providing support for daily activities and reducing muscle fatigue.
The concept of using an exoskeleton to compensate for muscle weakness and enhance mobility is a promising one. The integration of personalized springs to relieve the muscles in the arms and shoulders, along with the textile solution for connecting the exoskeleton to the body, showcases a thoughtful approach to design that prioritizes comfort and usability.
Co-Creation
The involvement of designer Anneke van Abbema in the development process highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach when creating assistive technologies. Ergonomic considerations can play a crucial role in ensuring that the device not only functions effectively but also integrate seamlessly into the user’s life.
The collaboration with Bolster Softgoods has addressed manufacturing challenges, such as refining the design for production, achieving tighter tolerances, and streamlining the production process. The use of various industrial sewing machines and the division of production steps further indicate a comprehensive effort to create a feasible manufacturing pipeline.
User research

Future of this project
