The viQtor is a new 24-hour monitoring tool introduced by smartQare. This tool utilizes a multi-sensor solution for continuous monitoring, providing real-time insights into various aspects of a person’s health and well-being. The device is designed to be worn on the upper arm and offers remote visibility into the wearer’s condition, which is particularly beneficial for individuals receiving care at home, those with chronic conditions, patients recovering from surgery, and patients dealing with conditions like COVID, including lung-related issues.
The development process
The development process involved collaborations with the design agency Van Berlo Design and Bolster Softgoods. The casing of the electronics and the visual design of the textile sleeve were initially created by Van Berlo Design Agency, and Bolster Softgoods played a key role in prototyping and producing the sleeve that holds the monitoring device. The challenge arose when implementing the sleek visual design of the sleeve into a textile solution, as some assembly parts and closures were not included in the original visualization.
Redesign due to the new biocompatibility requirement
Additionally, the requirements evolved to ensure the product’s compatibility with ISO 10993-1 standard, which govern the biocompatibility of medical devices used on the skin. Certain assembly and connecting parts of the textile sleeve such as Velcro, elastic materials, and lamination used for bonding layers of textile did not pass the Cytotoxicity test. Cytotoxicity testing assesses the potential of materials to cause harm to living cells. Since these components did not meet the necessary biocompatibility criteria, they were deemed unsuitable for use in the final product.
As a result, the design had to be revised to exclude these materials. This led to the decision to create a new design using a single type of silicone material that did meet the biocompatibility standards. The new silicone-based sleeve addresses the issues with cytotoxicity and other biocompatibility concerns, ensuring that the product is safe for prolonged contact with the user’s skin.
New design sleeve in silicon
This new silicone-based sleeve is not only fully biocompatible but also waterproof, allowing users to wear it while showering. It’s designed to accommodate a wide range of upper arm sizes, specially catering to individuals over the age of 75 who make up the target audience. The band can be easily cut to size for each user, ensuring a comfortable fit without loose end.
The durability and ease of cleaning are notable features of this new design. The silicone material can be quickly rinsed and dried, making it suitable for use in hospital, care institution, or home environments where cleanliness is crucial.
